Best Running Sock for the Winter - Part 1 (Smartwool Hike Light Cushio

SMARTWOOL

Hike Light Cushion Crew — $25

How I tested: 9-mile run · 22°F winter conditions · hilly paved terrain · Nike Vomero Plus · recovery-pace mileage.

Editor’s Take

This sock was a pleasant surprise for winter running. Even though it’s marketed as a hiking sock, the Smartwool fit system felt dialed-in for running — zero slip, zero friction, and no hot-spots across the full 9 miles. Coming straight from the Balega Hidden Comfort ankle socks the day before, the crew height made a huge difference — my ankles stayed warm and protected instead of freezing in the wind. Breathability was solid for Merino: toward the end of the run I could feel a little wind on my toes, but they only felt slightly cool, never cold. My feet stayed warm without sweating, which is rare in winter socks. They do feel a bit bulkier underfoot and give off “hiking boot energy,” but once I settled into the miles they performed far better than expected. They aren’t as silky-soft as Balega and don’t have the same locked-in precision feel as Feetures Elite — but for cold-weather long runs, this is a surprisingly strong option.
